1983 SUPREME GRANDMASTER NAM SUK LEES OFFICE, CHANG MOO KWAN HEADQUARTERS, SEOUL, KOREA: On each of his tours of Asia and South East Asia, Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman visited Supreme Grandmaster Lee's office in Seoul. This photo was taken on Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman's very first trip to the Far East. The map in the background pin points all of the many world wide cities in which Supreme Grand Master had visited as an ambassador of Chang Moo Kwan. On the left sleeve of Grandmaster Wiedenman's sweat shirt are the flags of each country he had visited and studied martial arts: Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Mainland China.

1984 KOREAN Restaurant, SEOUL, KOREA: On his second trip to Asian, Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman spent more time with Supreme Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee. Along with an interpreter, Grandmaster Wiedenman has a formal, traditional dinner with Supreme Grandmaster Lee. Grandmaster Wiedenman recalls "I have been eating Korean food for years, and there were some things on the table I had never seen before, nor would have ever ordered...however, when Supreme Grandmaster pointed to a dish I ate it...and the dishes just kept on coming." To this day Grandmaster Wiedenman thinks it was a "rite of food passage." The other funny thing recalls was pertaining to the chop sticks. Grandmaster Wiedenman recalls: "I have been eating with chopsticks almost all my life, and I consider myself somewhat of an expert. I swear the waitress gave me two knitting needles. Everything, and I mean everything was slipping off. I did not know how to explain to Supreme Grandmaster Lee that the chopsticks were not what I was used to. When I politely refused a fork, I think Grandmaster realized I was not one to give up easy, despite adversity."

1985 SEOUL, KOREA: THE 1985 7TH WORLD TAE KWON DO CHAMPIONSHIPS: By Grandmasters Jon Wiedenman 3rd tour of Asia and Southeast Asia, Supreme Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee had gotten use to him popping in and out. This tour they spent still more time together. When asked what Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman recalls most about this event, he replied smiling: "Well when I showed up outside the stadium dressed in a loose fitting linen jacket with a silk designer button down shirt underneath, baggie linen slacks, and hemp shoes with no socks...well. Grandmaster Lee--upon meeting me outside the event--asked me if I had a 'regular' suit and tie to change into. I said 'no, sir, this how we dress in Southern California now, sorry. He rolled his eyes and signaled me to follow him inside. I think that is why he sat me behind him." Grandmaster Wiedenman said smiling. "I had figured out at the point that the widely popular TV action show "Miami Vice" had not made its way to Seoul television yet." One interesting note that perhaps foretold of a tide of change to come, Supreme Grandmaster Lee is seated in the stadium instead of the floor or with the officials.

1993 OCTOBER, TAE KWON DO TIMES: Between 1985 and 1993 Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman had met Supreme Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee on several occasions, mostly at promotion tests in California. Although we had no idea then, Grandmaster was already spending much of his time in United States. Shortly after the late Master James Dussault published his ground breaking article "Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee: Patriarch of the Chang Moo Kwan: Part 1", in October of 1993, he was lucky enough to get his highly prized autograph on both the magazines cover and the handsome portrait inside (Shown above) Master Dussault was to follow with a part 2 in the Tae Kwon Do Time issue dated December 1993. (Both will be available in our section tabbed "Chang Moo Kwan Articles.")

1993, DECEMBER, TAE KWON DO TIMES ARTICLE: In this rare autographed photo of Supreme Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee is articulating a combination knife hand block and stomp kick to his son Youn Lee. Master James A. L. Dussault May 28th 1958 to February 19th 2002, was admired and respected by Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee. Master James Dussault's articles brought Supreme Grandmaster Lee's story to the martial arts world.
Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman and Master George Fullerton had many conversations with James Dussault following the turmoil preceding Supreme Grandmasters deaths. After Supreme Grandmaster Lee's death, someone was apparently trying to copyright the long standing and highly revered Chang Moo Kwan logo and name. Luis Rodriquez, a master of Supreme Grandmaster Lee and Master George Fullerton, found this out by visiting the United States Copyright office website. This was late in 2001. When James found out he was livid. At the time he was setting up what he called a "Martial Arts University" in Las Vegas, Nevada. He dropped everything to meet with Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman and Master George Fullerton. He jumped in his car and drove the 280 miles to Los Angeles, California, and the three dedicated Chang Moo Kwanist met at--of all places--a Korean restaurant in Koreatown. Grandmaster Fullerton recalls, "We thought he would show up in a New Mercedes or something, instead he showed up in a classic Cadillac, El Dorado. When he pulled up Grandmaster Wiedenman and I were waiting, man it looked like he was living in his car. He grabbed a few files from a jam packed trunk, and we all went into the restaurant. I swear he talked non-stop." Grandmaster Wiedenman and Master Fullerton talked with Master James Dussault for several house. Master Fullerton recalls there was a lot of food, and James and Grandmaster Wiedenman had a few beers. As Master Fullerton recalled, "the conversation wandered between the circumstances surrounding the copyright, what Master James Dussault was doing with his University, and his fond memories of Supreme Grandmaster Lee. Suddenly, Master Dussault jumped up and literally ripped open his shirt stating emphatically, 'they can't copyright the Chang Moo Kwan logo, if they do they will own my chest.'" Grandmaster Wiedenman and Master Fullerton were floored. In living color, the size of a coffee can container lid, was the Chang Moo Kwan logo tattooed on his chest over his heart. Things were quiet for a few seconds, and out of nowhere Grandmaster Wiedenman exclaimed to Master Dussault, "Ok, I see your point Master Dussault. If you can make this thing go away, I will get a Chang Moo Kwan tattoo too. Grandmaster Fullerton just smiled an shook his head, Master Dussault smiled, and Grandmaster Wiedenman look wondered what he had promised. When later asked Grandmaster Wiedenman was asked what he was thinking at the time he explained: "I always thought I would gracefully get Master Dussault to let me out of my promise after the fact."
When Grandmaster Wiedenman and Master Fullerton heard that just a few short months later Master James Dussault had died suddenly, they were shocked and bewildered. Master Dussault had successfully submitted the paperwork that thwarted an attempt to copyright the Chang Moo Kwan logo and name before he had passed. When they heard Master Fullerton exclaimed "We just talked to him, I cannot believe how fast things can change." Master Fullerton and Grandmaster Wiedenman both agreed on how fleeting life can be. In Master Dussault memory, Master Fullerton to this day reminds Grandmaster Wiedenman of his promise--sealed by death--to get a Chang Moo Kwan Tattoo.
James Dussault will be remembered as a seminal contributor to Chang Moo Kwans legacy.

1994 POMONA, CALIFORNIA: Supreme Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee attend many promotion tests. Grandmaster Wiedenman was fortunate enough to have Grandmaster Lee to sit in on almost all of his black belt exams over about twenty years. "When he was there I knew I had to dig deep. I knew he wanted to see every ounce of my 'Chung Shin' my "spirit" flow. I knew when I did my forms, that inwardly he was reflecting on hundreds of thousands of form presentations he had witnessed all over the world. I know he knew me from my visits to his office in Korea almost a decade ago. When I was completing my last form of the promotion test, and near my physical limit I remember time stopped for what seemed like minutes. Few people could understand what had happened. I felt like when you are surfing and get shot out of the tube in a burst of trapped air. At once I was completely focused on the form and the movements yet totally aware of everything in the room and world around me. It was the single most enlightening moment in 40 years in martial arts. Years later, discussing it with Supreme Grandmaster Lee, he explained it as something that translates into a paradox. 'total focus on what you are doing, and at the same time complete awareness of your surroundings.'" Humbly shaking a smiling Supreme Grandmaster's hand that day, Grandmaster Wiedenman had no idea that in a few short years they would be teacher and student.

1998 July Supreme Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee had witnessed grandmaster Jon Wiedenman’s 4th and 5th degree tests. Once again Supreme Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee contacts Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee regarding a fax he sent about certificates. Grandmaster Wiedenman was shocked to find out Supreme Grandmaster Lee had a local 310 fax number. Grandmaster Wiedenman lives in San Pedro, California. When he received a letter with a San Pedro letter head, he realized Supreme Grandmaster lived less than a mile from his home and half a mile away from his San Pedro YMCA Dojang. Once finding this out, Grandmaster Wiedenman requests his presence at his San Pedro Boys and Girls Club Black Belt Test. He accepted and showed up with his son Master Hack Lee. (See following photos)
The next offer was for Supreme Grandmaster Lee to visit the San Pedro YMCA for the 7:30 adult class. He accepted and Grandmaster Wiedenman picked him up at his San Pedro residence and they entered the San Pedro YMCA Dojang together. Many may know Supreme Grandmaster Lee began his first official Dojang at a YMCA in Seoul. “I think it was like a coming home for Supreme Grandmaster Lee. In the middle of the class he just calmly waved his hands parting the class and half. In his street clothes and socks, he taught my awestruck adult class for about an hour. By the look on his face he had come home. My interpreter was my dry cleaner, Young. I asked her to please call and ask if Supreme Grandmaster Lee could teach our adult class.” Young called back and explained it had been many years since he had taught. He did not have a uniform or a belt. Grandmaster Wiedenman said he would take care of that. Grandmaster Wiedenman looked back at the article written by the late James Dussault in the 1993 October issue of Tae Kwon Do Times. He then had interpreter/dry cleaner/seamstress Young sew the patches on exactly how they we situated in the photos. When Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee showed up in front of the San Pedro YMCA in his Oldsmobile Cutlass, Grandmaster Wiedenman was there with a neatly folded and pressed uniform and new black belt. As I turned out the uniform was on size to big, so Supreme Grandmaster Lee had it altered.
In the photos which follow, you will see what followed. He actively taught our adult class, and finally gave in to Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman’s urgings for private lessons. Every Wednesday at 2:00 Supreme Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee and Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman would train together both actively participating. Between them they had well over 100 years of training in traditional Chang Moo Kwan. In regular class, Master Anthony Barnes, George Fullerton, and David Johns received hours of training with Grandmaster Lee. As you can see by the photos and video caps following, Supreme Grandmaster Lee was a active participant in his teachings. Grandmaster Wiedenman pointed out “We had no idea how much time we had, and we sure did not concern ourselves with where he was taking us. My Dojang, all of my students, emptied our cups and went along for the ride. What a win-win situation.”
Grandmaster pointed out: “If you look at the photo of Supreme Grandmaster Lee when he is outside the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club posted in this section, and then you look at his photos in our Dojang in the San Pedro YMCA, you see a completely different man. His love for Chang Moo Kwan and his love for his art and teaching, shave 20 years off his appearance.

1999 San Pedro, California YMCA: Supreme Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee demonstrates a proper front punch to a lower ranking student. When Supreme Grandmaster Lee taught, he would spend and equal time with higher and lower ranking students. Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman is turning around watchful for every lesson Supreme Grandmaster would teach, no matter how seemingly insignificant. Grandmaster Wiedenman recalls: "Sometimes I just could not believe he was teaching my class. I would watch his every move because I wanted to see how he related, interacted, and motivated our students. He was highly energetic, and Supreme Grandmaster Lee was always on the move, if not with his body, with his eyes. He constantly demonstrated. He would never hesitate to patiently show a student as many times as it took to get it right. In the years I trained with Supreme Grandmaster Lee I never saw him get frustrated in the least. When a student something right, Supreme Grandmaster would always give a half-smile and a nod and say 'Ok.'"

1999 San Pedro, California YMCA: Supreme Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee demonstrates a cross block against Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman while students watch intensely. "Whenever Supreme Grandmaster demonstrated anything, all students stopped what they were doing, sat down, and listened." said Grandmaster Wiedenman. Though few had a total comprehension of what they were experiencing, Grandmaster Wiedenman and Master George Fullerton would frequently discuss Supreme Grandmaster Lee's Chang Moo Kwan history and contributions. They would put it simply "we are training with the source of Chang Moo Kwan." Master George Fullerton is sitting in the front line.

Whether it was a private lesson between Supreme Grandmaster Lee and Grandmaster Jon Wiedenman, or a group lesson with the San Pedro YMCA adult class, partner training was mandatory. Generally, Supreme Grandmaster Lee would teach the practical application of key techniques and movements in the forms. He would also as students to partner up for one and three step sparring.
